Arthur Conan Doyle Autograph Letter Signed "A. Conan Doyle." The rarity and exceptional value of this lot is "Elementary, my dear Watson." Oddly enough, the line quoted above does not appear in any of the Sherlock Holmes books, but only appears later in the movies about the detective. At any rate, this is a fantastic lot for Sherlock Holmes fans. This one page, 4.75" x 6.5," letter written and signed by Doyle, in May of 1897, is to a friend of Doyle's, and reads in part, "I am so sorry that I can't play on the 19th. By an extraordinary coincidence, it is the day when Barnes' literary team (which I usually captain) has its one annual match & I am under permanent promise to play for them…Couldn't you come to a modest unceremonious no-dress dinner tomorrow?" The letter is in fine condition, with only slight transference of ink from being folded over the years.

Arthur Conan Doyle's works have been translated into numerous languages, and read all over the world for decades. Every child grows up now knowing about Sherlock Holmes and his penchant for ratiocination and deductive reasoning. Doyle was an amazing man who had many interesting beliefs. It is said that he believed in Fairies, and even wrote several pamphlets explaining why he believed in their existence, he spent over a million dollars supporting these beliefs.

This is a fascinating man who is known, the world over, for a character whose logic and rational thinking are paramount in his personality; conversely, Doyle was a man who believed in the irrational and fanciful. A wonderful dichotomy! A wonderful letter!
