Very nice painting of a Chinese Merchant in Chinatown, San Francisco California. Backside of the painting reads To Mrs A.S. Cowie With Warmest Regards Arthur B Dodge 1933. Gouache on paper. 12.5" by 14.5" framed. Striking composition, vibrant colors. Arthur Burnside Dodge (1863 - 1952) was active/lived in California, Rhode Island. Arthur Dodge is known for Landscape, marine, illustrator. A newspaper illustrator, print maker, and easel painter, Arthur Dodge was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and was brought to California via the Panama Canal by his parents when he was six-months old. The family lived in Grass Valley for ten years and then settled in San Francisco. He began his career as a wood engraver and then spent five years studying art in New York City . Returning to San Francisco in 1890, he worked as a newspaper illustrator until 1901 when he moved to Los Angeles and spent 42 years as art director of the "Times". He also did many watercolor paintings of local subjects. Memberships included the California Art Club and the Cartoonist Club.
