Arthur Ashe's 1972 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life at the height of his awe-inspiring career. Ashe's concise, utilitarian entries serve as reminders for his various public engagements. This was the year Ashe drew international attention to apartheid's encroachment into world sports in South Africa. Two years earlier, Ashe had applied for entry into the South Africa Open as the top-ranked American in tennis, but he was denied a visa into the country. Public outcry resulted in South Africa's explusion from the International Lawn Tennis Federation and the Davis Cup. Ashe was admitted the following year and won doubles with Tom Okker. Here, Ashe notes his commitments to a Coca Cola endorsement appearance, a players meeting at the U.S. Open Club, an ATA [American Tennis Association] banquet, the LA Open and the Davis Cup, with press conferences in Century City and Orange County. Ashe hand-writes his itinerary: ''Press Conference / demo / autographs...'' He also makes a note, ''Savings account for ATP [Association of Tennis Professionals] money''. Ashe was instrumental in that organization's formation that year as an advocate of tennis players' rights. Rotterdam WTC in its first year here makes a prominent appearance; Ashe won the tournament. Following its mention Ashe writes, ''Rome WTC Finals'', ''Israeli Olympic Dinner'' and ''Get ILTF [International Lawn Tennis Federation] Rules''. He marks the day of the Indy 500 and ''African Lib Day''. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on most pages of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75'' x 8.25''. In very good condition, with mild wear and rubbing to pencil inscriptions. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow. A personal record of each significant day in one of the tennis legend's greatest years.
