Arthur Ashe's 1986 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life, which would end in just 7 years. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his concise, utilitarian entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. Ashe suffered a heart attack in 1979 and then underwent bypass surgeries, during which he received a transfusion of HIV positive blood in 1988. He kept his diagnosis private until 1992, when he became an activist in the anti-AIDS effort before his 1993 passing. In tennis, Ashe here mentions his commitments to attend a Texas Tennis Association dinner, a tennis writers' luncheon and the Jackie Robinson Awards at the Waldorf Astoria. On his busy social calendar, Ashe writes, ''ML King Dinner'', ''Duke Ellington Mtg.'', ''Anti Apartheid Rally'', ''Earl Morrow tournament'', and ''Knick Game''. His media engagements include CBS and HBO. He also makes time for a retreat, golf, a vacation and ''rest.'' He keeps track of sporting events across all disciplines, marking the day of the Super Bowl, Davis Cup, U.S. Open, and reports, ''GREATEST BASEBALL GAME EVER METS 7 ASTROS 6'' in large lettering. He lists many contacts and their phone numbers, including OJ Simpson's phone number, and notes when Chuck McKinley died. Medically, Ashe reminds himself of a fasting blood test, and a separate slip of his personal stationery is included on which he has listed his blood levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. He also makes a note regarding the documents required for adopting his daughter. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on almost every single page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75'' x 8.25''. In very good condition, with light overall wear and a tear to a page in January. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow. A very personal record of each significant day in one of the tennis legend's later years.
