Arthur Ashe's 1983 day planner. Journal was consistently used by Ashe all year to remember appointments and record the important events in his busy life. Ashe's priorities are revealed through his concise, utilitarian entries, which serve as reminders for his various public engagements and events of personal significance to him. After suffering a heart attack in 1979, Ashe was forced to go back for a second heart surgery this year, where, during a blood transfusion, he contracted HIV, though unaware of the virus until 1988. He kept his diagnosis private until 1992, when he became an activist in the anti-AIDS effort before his 1993 passing. Ashe keeps track of sporting events across all disciplines, noting various tennis match-ups throughout the year, including Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and more. He participates in countless civic engagements, speeches and the like, including, for example, ''Prepare Yale Talk'', with most days filled with 7+ meetings. He records personal reminders such as, ''Grandmommie's Jays Birthday'' and ''Parents Anniversary'', and also details trips to Milan, Monte Carlo, Hamburg, and various locations around the world. Notations in Ashe's hand appear on most every page of the spiral-bound Day-At-A-Glance book. Features a black faux-leather soft cover. Measures 5.75'' x 8.25''. Very minor toning, else very good. With an LOA from Arthur Ashe's widow.
