The bronze sculpture is of the Hellenic deity, Artemis, goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity, and young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women. The deer and the cypress were sacred to her. The beholder views her resting on the earth's ground with the sacred deer as she puts her arm around its neck while the other holds a bow. Deer were the only animals held sacred to Artemis herself. On seeing a deer larger than a bull with horns shining, she fell in love with these creatures and held them sacred. Deer were also the first animals she captured. She caught five golden-horned deer called Elaphoi Khrysokeroi and harnessed them to her chariot. This bronze sculpture was cast using the archaic method of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina finish for preservation and mounted upon a marble base. Dimensions: Height 14 X Width 12 inches. Weight: 23 LBS.
