Major general in the Revolutionary War (1727–1800), second in command to George Washington, and, later, congressman from Massachusetts. Partly-printed Revolutionary War-dated DS, one page, 13 x 13, October 10, 1778. The Massachusetts-Bay Council appoints John May an “Adjutant of the Boston Regiment of Militia in the County of Suffolk whereof Jabez Hatch Esquire is Colonel with the rank of Captain.” Signed along the left border by 15 members of the council: Artemus Ward, Jeremiah Powell, Thomas Cushing, Benjamin White, Benjamin Austin, Daniel Davis, Daniel Hopkins, Timothy Danielson, Francis W. Dana, Abraham Fuller, Oliver Prescott, Nathan Cushing, Oliver Wendell, Samuel Niles, and Eleazar Brooks. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (reinforced on the reverse), a few small areas of paper loss along folds and edges, and scattered toning. The paper seal is lightly toned and intact. A great connection between 15 influential Massachusetts leaders and an early revolutionary.
