Artemas Ward Autograph Letter Blaming "the Democratic Clubs" for the Whiskey Rebellion. Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pages, recto and verso, Philadelphia, December 15, 1794. To "Dear Dana." In fine condition, albeit an enthusiastic soul has "improved" on the clarity of two letters in pencil, as well as noted "highly interesting" in one corner, and the information that the letter came from Goodspeeds in another. With typed transcript. In this intimate letter - perhaps to his son, Henry Dana - the old Revolutionary General Ward delivers a benediction to the young man, newly removed to Charleston, ending with a warning: stay away from "the Democratic Clubs" -- they caused the Whiskey Rebellion. In part: "I hope & trust you will be careful to do all the good within your sphere that it is possible for you to do, both to yourself & your fellowmen. You will in the first place be careful to fix in the minds of those you are concerned with, you are a person of abilities, that you pay a sacred regard to sincerity, integrity, & strict Justice... daily seeking to the all-wise Governor of the universe for his protection and blessing, I have no doubt of your being crowned with complete success... Every moment we receive favors for which we ought to be thankful... I ardently pray you may through the merits of Jesus Christ be received to Zion.... God almighty bless you. (N.B) I hope you will never forsake the northern Politics & adopt the present Southern ones. Harmony is much more prevalent in Congress than last sessions. The Democratic Clubs are... reprobated, it is the general received opinion they were one cause of the late insurrection in the four Western Counties of Pennsylvania." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
