<B>Artemas Ward (1727-1800) American Major General in the Revolutionary War, his signature</B></I> "<I>Artemas Ward</B></I>" on a 3" x 1.25" sheet neatly mounted onto a mid-nineteenth century 5" x 8" sheet of paper. Ward served as commander of the forces surrounding the British in Boston following Lexington and Concord in 1775. After the continental Congress appointed George Washington as Commander in Chief, Ward became a Major-General and second in command. It was Ward who gave orders to fortify Breed's Hill in June 1775 which precipitated the Battle of Bunker Hill. Fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
