Esteemed player and manager (1885-1950) of the NY Giants and Yankees. ALS signed “Arthur Fletcher,” one page both sides, 8 x 10, January 5, 1944. Letter to his friend Pat during the holiday season. In part: “I am going to celebrate my 59th birthday by writing you folks…On Dec. 26th I entered the hospital…for a minor operation (postrate [sic] trouble). They operated Tuesday…and on New Years day. I came home…Haven’t had a bit of pain to speak of and by this coming Sat. I can go out. They blocked the spine and I was numb from the hips down so didn’t feel a thing. I was in the operating room about an hour all together. Sure are glad they didn’t give me ether….Guess you saw where Keller went in the Navy and they are expecting Gordon to enlist. I hardly see how they can carry on next year if they take many more.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds and light scattered creasing. During World War II, baseball lost 500 players to the service, including the two players mentioned by Fletcher, Charlie Keller and Joe Gordon.
