TLS, one page on a 7.75 x 9.25 self-contained Air Mail letter, The Royal Institute of International Affairs letterhead, July 4, 1962. Letter to Mr. Lichter responding to an “interesting question,” in part: “The answer to this depends, I should say, on the attitude of the organised religion in question. If it was Hinduism or Buddhism, I think an active affiliation could be a positive factor for a mature intellect. These religions leave one intellectually free. At the same time, they commit one, as most religions do, to taboos and other observances which might be irrational and perhaps also objectionable. Christianity and Islam do not leave one intellectually free. What about Judaism? I have the impression that the dogmatic beliefs on which it insists are fewer and simpler than Christianity’s. On the other hand, Judaism, too, does demand some basic dogmatic beliefs which might not be credible to every mature individual intellect.” Stamped and addressed on the reverse in type. In fine condition, with scattered creases and expected tears to edges from opening.
