The son of a sailmaker, he specialised in summery river landscape, coastal scenes, and winter landscape with skaters. The horizontally arranged compositions feature fishermen hauling in their nets and hunters shooting duck, and their foreground is dominated by large-scale figures and acutely observed details such as boats, baskets, and fishing nets. Cabel's palette is marked by strong greens and yellows and his work is frequently compared to that of Hendrick Avercamp.
