[Archives - Erven Lucas Bols] - "Copie Boek beginnende den 18 november 1815". Amsterdam, 18 Nov. 1815 - 4 Oct. 1816, folio, 31,5 x 20 cm, contemp. half sheep over black boards (rubbed), ms. title on paper cutting (front cover), 128-[6] pp. (a few stains, browning at edges). Well-preserved. € 1000/1200 Large collection of some 250 letters in a number of hands, with an alphabetical index at the end. This is the business correspondence from a period vital to the existence of Bols Distilleries. Until 1816 the distilleries (founded by Lucas Bols in 1575, and flourishing with the Amsterdam spice trade) remained in the hands of the family and the secret and succesful recipes were passed on from father to son. But in that year the direct family died out and the company was sold. From that time it called itself "Erven Lucas Bols". The letters show many requests for the payment of outstanding accounts, tell about shipments of products and the quality and prices of the products. Customers are recorded in the Netherlands, present-day Belgium (firms at Antwerp, Brussels and Gent), Germany (Aachen, Cologne, Frankfurt), France (Paris), Italy (Venice), Sweden and Switzerland.
