Archive of Capt. George B. Bartlett. Of
Archive of Capt. George B. Bartlett. Of Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Group of 41 pieces: 1) Original carte of Bartlett in uniform. On verso, "Cadwallader & Tappan, Marietta, Ohio," with revenue stamp. Very fine. 2) A.L.S. of Bartlett, to financee Vesta, a schoolteacher, Mar. 4, 1863, 3 pp., written while building Grant's canal around the Mississippi River, part of Grant's plan to capture Vicksburg. Mentions "Rebs" coming in under a flag of truce, and a dispatch boat meeting them. 3) A.L.S. to Vesta, May 24, 1863, 3 pp. "...My tent is crowded. It means sometimes the Regiment tries to get in. News from Grant's Army. He has won a great victory and got the Rebs in a pen. No doubt he has got Vicksburg before this time...." A rare reference by a Captain to Grant's active involvement in the fall of Vicksburg. 4) Two Ds.S., Jan. 1862, appointing Bartlett Sergeant of Co. D, 63rd O.V.I., signed by Edward Noyes, a Brevet Brig. Gen., who lost a leg in Battle of Nick-o-Jack Creek. Other document appoints Bartlett Justice of the Peace, postwar. 5) Discharge of Bartlett, 1866. 6) Document concerning his pension. 7) Group of 35 A.Ls.S. from Vesta Wolcott to Bartlett, war date. Most are from Waterford, Ohio, where she taught. Some with patriotic vignettes. An unusual letter about her brother Rollin, in Parkersburg, who has enlisted in a Virginia cavalry! Most with original envelopes. Good to fine.
