Archibald MacLeish Typed Letter Signed :A. MacLeish:. One page, 5.75" x 7.5", personal stationery, Uphill Farm, Conway, Massachusetts, July 27, 1957. Written to "Mr. Hartley", in this letter MacLeish responds to an aspiring writer who apparently had asked about the importance of a college education to a writer. The poet comments on Hemingway, Eliot, Yeats, and Pound in this connection, and observes that he himself had to unlearn "what other people's ideas of my life should be" because he attended Yale in the "blue sweater era" of conformist, upper-class thought and social organization. A wonderful letter, very illuminating of MacLeish's thoughts on an important subject. Includes original envelope. Very fine condition; usual folds are present.
