Fifth (and longest-serving) Commandant of the United States Marine Corps (1783–1859), who served from 1820 to 1859. Partly-printed DS, signed “Arch. Henderson,” one page, 17 x 14, June 13, 1858. Special discharge issued to Corporal Edward H. Soper, serving aboard the frigate Constellation, who was a butcher at the time of his enlistment. Signed at the conclusion by Henderson as Commandant of the Marine Corps. In very good condition, with small separations along fragile intersecting folds, with one fold through a single letter of signature, and scattered light toning and foxing. The first such Henderson discharge we have seen.
