<td width="100%">
This archaic bronze icon of Kwan Yin- the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion- is of unknown history but looks very old. It was
purchased in an antique store in Dunhuang, China, far out in the
western region that was settled during the Silk Road era. Kwan
Yin answers the call of all who seek her assistance but she is
particularly beseeched by women who want to bear children. She
stands atop a dragon - the symbol for spirituality, wisdom,
strength and the divine powers of transformation. From a vase
she pours the healing water of life, the nectar of compassion
and wisdom.
There is a simplicity and lack of sophistication in this piece that
is unusual in Buddhist iconography. The style of clothing and
the lines in general are indicative of the Tang Dynasty (618?
907).
