In 1957 when Diane Arbus's marriage to Allan was failing she started to work on her own. Diane separated from her husband in 1959 when she began to study photography under Lisette Model. Shunning the world of fashion photography, Diane chose to focus on people who were different. Arbus enjoyed photographing the so-called "freaks", transvestites and asylum patients.
