Arboles,NM - La Plata County - 1874 - Ute Squaw of Northern New Mexico Portrait, Stereoview :
A well-documented photo from the Expedition of 1874, 1st Lieut. Geo. M. Wheeler, of the Corps of Engineers Commanding. The picture is of Pah-ge, a Ute Squaw of the Kah-poh-the band from Northern New Mexico and was photographed by T.H. O’Sullivan. She is standing next to a waist-high table covered with a buffalo robe, and she wears a white dress, leggings and has a blanket around her shoulders. The Expedition was for Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian undertaken by the War Department’s Corps of Engineers. This woman pictured was undoubtedly of the Southern Ute people whose reservation lies partly in southwestern Colorado and partly in northern New Mexico, consisting of parts of La Plata, Archuleta and Montezuma counties. Medium focus, slightly faded, yellow border. 4 x 7.”
