Aquatic Dolphin Architectural Tile
This has it all going for it! A nice hefty tile piece, wonderful iridescent glaze in the recess and great glazes on the rest, and a well executed and crisp design of a sea serpent or dolphin. Measuring 8 1/2" square, and just shy of 1" thick - this has very nice relief. The background color and the serpent's color is a pleasing sea green, while the circular border is ocean blue with the buff clay color coming through. Reminiscent of designs by Herman Carl Mueller, the maker and age are unknown, however probably American, ca 1910. The back is hand incised with the measurements. This beauty does have the beginning of a hairline on the back and side edge. This may in fact be a firing crack, since the tile has so much clay. The surface and glaze are excellent. This could look unbelievable in the right setting. The identical mate to this tile (in similar condition) is also available for purchase to the winning bidder. This auction is for one tile.
