1779 Report: Inoculations to Stop the Spread of Smallpox!
April 1779-Dated Revolutionary War, THE GENTLEMAN’S MAGAZINE, London, England, Very Fine.
Monthly Magazine measuring 8” x 5”, two-column layout, pages 161-216, “By Sylvanus Urban, Printed for D. Henry, at St. John’s Gate.” lacking a map of St. Lucia, West Indies. This Revolutionary War era issue with a wide variety of historical period news and perspectives. An interesting woodcut variation on the title page, featuring a man walking his dog, a carriage, and pedestrians in a courtyard between large brick or stone walls. The first page is slightly offset into the right edge page numbers. Contents include a letter to Pope Urban about portraits of Mary Queen of Scots; Parliamentary debates; naval and military transactions in the West Indies; the trial of Admiral Keppel; and a discussion of the benefits of “general inoculation” to reduce the threat of Smallpox (which was also being accomplished by the American Continental Army at the time)!
