Appleton, W.S. DESCRIPTION OF MEDALS OF WASHINGTON IN THE COLLECTION OF W.S. APPLETON SECRETARY OF THE BOSTON NUMISMATIC SOCIETY. Boston: Press of T.R. Marvin and Son, 1873. 4to, disbound. 24 pages; over 300 listings. Lacking original printed card covers; first leaf loose; worn and stained. Good only. An extremely rare collected edition of a series of articles originally appearing in the American Journal of Numismatics. It marked a great advance over the earlier efforts of Snowden and Woodward, being itself superseded by Baker's magnum opus a dozen years later. The author, a lifelong Boston resident, devoted his life to numismatics and historical studies, forming extensive collections of coins and medals. The condition of this example may be lacking, but it is the first we've offered in years. Ex Money Tree Sale 24, Part One (Champa duplicates), lot 70.
