Appleton's Picturesque Palestine, Sinai & Egypt
Appleton's Picturesque Palestine, Sinai & Egypt With Numerous Engravings on Steel and Wood from Original Drawings by Harry Fenn and J. D. Woodward by Colonel Wilson (New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1881-1883); in Two Volumes; first book edition; x, 480 pages, x, 476 pages; illustrated with several hundred woodcuts, 40 full-page steel engravings, and two double-page color maps; full brown morocco with decorative blind tooling and gilt title, banded spine with gilt titles; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt; thick folio (10.5" x 13"). The Colonel Wilson listed as author is (Major General) Sir Charles William Wilson (1836-1905), who spent a number of years in the Palestine area. He was born in Liverpool, obtained his commission in the Royal Engineers in 1855 and was sent to Jerusalem in 1864 to do a topographical survey of the area. His various duties carried him all over the Middle East and he won many awards and acclaims for his archaeological and geographical work there. These volumes are well written and profusely illustrated, covering many important areas of interest to the biblical scholar including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Galilee, and Damascus, and also the great landmarks of Egyptian history including the Pyramids and Luxor. The bindings show wear and the front covers are loose but still attached. Internally, the pages are clean with only a tiny bit of occasional foxing. Overall very good. The third and last in the "Picturesque" series from Appleton- we are proud to offer the complete collection in matching bindings.
