Appleton's Picturesque Europe in 3 Volumes 1875
Appleton's Picturesque Europe. A Delineation By Pen And Pencil of The Natural Features and the Picturesque and Historical Places of Great Britain and the Continent. Illustrated on Steel and Wood by European and American Artists. edited by Bayard Taylor (New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1875-1879); in Three Volumes; first book edition; iv, 488 pages, iv, 460 pages, iv, 491 pages; contains hundreds of woodcut illustrations and 63 full-page steel engravings; full brown morocco with decorative blind tooling and gilt title, banded spine with gilt titles; marbled endpapers; all edges gilt; thick folio (10.5" x 13"). Bayard Taylor, the editor of this massive work was a poet and writer whose extensive travels in Europe supplied material for many popular papers and magazines of the day as well as various books. These volumes were the sequels to the Picturesque America series. The first volume is strictly of the British Isles and the other two covers the Continent with beautiful views of all the best Europe has to offer. The bindings show some wear to the leather but are still tight and intact. There is scattered light foxing inside affecting the margins of some of the engravings. Overall very good.
