Uncommon Manned Flight Awareness certificate with an Apollo 8 medallion, 1.5? in diameter, containing metal flown during the second Apollo manned mission. The medallion, which features embossed profiles of the three-man crew, is affixed to an 8 x 10.5 certificate with presentation letter from CDR Frank Borman, which reads, in part: “It seemed to us that there should be some way of providing those who worked in the program some symbol in their efforts. We carried on the first manned lunar flight a small piece of aluminum. This piece of metal was melted down and incorporated into the metal used in making this commemorative medallion.” The Borman signature below is a preprinted facsimile. Included is a typescript of the same letter on NASA letterhead, also bearing a facsimile signature. In fine condition. From the personal collection of Paul Kruppenbacher, a member of the NASA Houston Landing and Recovery Division who trained Apollo astronauts in water recovery procedures and was deployed on U.S. Navy aircraft carriers for crew and spacecraft recovery operations.
