Gene Cernan’s first edition color Apollo Earth Orbit chart for the Apollo 17 mission, 41.5 x 13.5, signed on the reverse in black ink, “Gene Cernan, Apollo XVII” and “‘If I ever saw a classic alteration halo around a volcanic crater, this is it.’ Harrison H. Schmitt, Apollo 17 LMP.” The reverse of the chart also features two large sketches by French journalist Bernard Chabbert, who, while covering the Apollo program, would draw on the back of extra flight maps in the press room. Chabbert’s humorous two sketches show the moment Schmitt and Cernan locate orange soil at station 4, Shorty Crater, during their second lunar EVA. The orange soil proved to be very small beads of volcanic glass formed over 3.5 billion years ago. Rolled and in fine condition, with some wear to edges and dampstaining to right side. Accompanied by a printed biography for Chabbert, a certificate of authenticity from the Novaspace Gene Cernan Garage Sale, and by a certificate of authenticity from Novaspace for the Schmitt autograph.
