Flown fabric state flag of Kansas, 5.75 x 4, affixed to a 19.5 x 15.5 mount bearing an affixed caption stating, “This flag carried to the moon aboard Apollo 16 during the first scientific exploration of the lunar highlands, April 16–27, 1972.” Signed and inscribed on the mount in black ink, “To Rhonda and Tommy, A big salute to two great friends. It was a great ride. With sincere best wishes. Charlie Duke.” Framed with a photo of Duke saluting the American flag on the lunar surface, a trimmed Beta patch of the Apollo 16 mission insignia, and a printed quote from Rene Descartes, “There is nothing so far removed from us so as to be beyond our reach, or so hidden that we cannot discover it.” In fine condition. As LMP for Apollo 16, Duke logged over twenty hours of extravehicular activities in the rugged landscape of the Descartes highlands. This wonderful Kansas flag was one of several state and US flags Duke had brought aboard the lunar module as part of his personal preference kit.
