Apache Style Polychrome Parfleche War Shield
The lot features a parfleche polychrome painted war shield in the style and manner of the Apache Native American Indians. The shield is not thought to be of an authentic Native American heritage, but possibly could be of an older trading post age. Overall the piece shows a parfleche rawhide construction with polychrome mineral paint in a sun design of yellow, red and green ocher coloring. At the top shows a red clothe lining and rawhide sewing. The back shows a purple faded painted finish and two parfleche hide hand holds. The center shows two pierced holes which could have held a drop of feathers, possibly eagle feathers that were removed due to legality. Overall measures 16"x17.5".
