This is an excellent Apache “floppy head” skull cracker War Club with a unique beaded and fringed drop dated to circa 1880’s. The war club tomahawk shows a stone head encased in wetted hide which then tapers down the bent twig shaft and is sewn with sinew. The piece has a wood haft or shaft wrapped in Indian tanned hide also has a sinew sewn construction with the terminal end showing an exceptional beaded and fringed drop having four 1865 Mercury Silver Dimes attached. The base of the war club head and onto the top portion of the club shows a darkened crimson stain, possibly original blood splatter, indicative of its true early age and use as a weapon. The piece was collected from the San Carlos Apache Native American Indians in Arizona. The outer edges of the drop shows a wonderful glass trade seed beads in Cheyenne pink, red white heart, and semi-transparent padre sky blue. The head measures 3”W and the club without the drop is 19”L.
