<B>Apache Shawl Necklace</B></I><BR>Circa 1890<BR>Length 9 3/4 in. Width 21 in.<BR><BR>The upper portion consists of a cloth panel fully beaded with a step pattern in navy blue against a white background. The edges are fitted with hook and eye clasps. A decorative panel of netted beadwork with a zigzag design in blue and white against a navy blue background drapes below.<BR>These elaborate necklaces were commonly worn by a girl during puberty ceremonies and at other important public functions. Other nearby peoples including the Mojave, Pimas, and Paiutes made similar netted beadwork collars.
