These are some of the earliest and well preserved set of Plains Apache Native American Indian moccasins from circa 1840-1860. The set shows a thick Buffalo hide sole that wraps over the edge of the moccasins (typical of early Apache moccasins called "cactus kickers") with Indian tanned hide tops and rare heal long cut fringe. The tops of the moccasins have excellent mineral earth pigment painted geometric design showing a medialuna (crescent) with hocking lances (images the Apache were familiar with from the "Soldados de Cuero" or Leather-Jacket Soldiers of the Spanish Colonial period from the New Mexico borders). These are in very well preserved museum quality condition. Provenance: These are from the Bob Coronato large early American & Native American collection from Sante Fe and Wyoming. Each piece piece shows a 10.5"L sole with 4.5"L fringe and 3.25"H heels.
