Apache Olla Basket 1880s Gift
In the 1880s, a missionary from Connecticut went West to work with the Indians. Mr. Boone was given a group of baskets and artifacts. Upon his return, he gave part of this gift grouping to his sister, Alice Boone who married into the Murdock family. In the late 1940s, a young lady who lived close to Mrs. Murdock was called to her house one day and given a choice of several baskets as a wedding present. She was told the story of Mrs. Murdock's brother, now deceased in the 1940s, who went West to work with the Indians in the 1880s. The baskets had been stored in an upstairs room of the house for years and never cleaned, dusted or disturbed. The bride picked one that had 53 animal figures and 3 human figures along with bands of all sorts of symbols. Mrs. Murdock told the bride to never sell the basket unless she really needed money. The bride passed away in 2008 and her estate is offering the basket without reserve to the collecting public. The basket stands 20" tall and very close to 20" wide. The basket has a very few minor rubs, scrapes and here and there a small broken weave but so minor and so untouched, it is hard to believe. I do not believe this basket has ever been dusted other than maybe a feather duster, as there is an almost white surface with visible dirt. The collector who buys this will be able to clean and conserve this basket in any way they please as it has been left alone since it was made. The weave is so tight on this Apache Olla that it would likely hold water. I would strongly suggest calling to reserve a phone line for bidding if you are seriously interested, we have only 9 phone lines available and bidding on this will open at $10,000.00 There is no reserve.
