A late work of Saura, which shows expressionist tendencies that can be interpreted as critical reflection on the Spanish society; Color lithographs by the artist fetch up to 2,600 euro on the international auction market

This color lithograph by Spanish artist Antonio Saura was created in 1988 and is part of a portfolio entitled ‘Une chair d’ombre’, which contains 5 sheets overall. Our work called ‘Melanchton III’ illustrates a distorted figurative shape, executed in the gestural style. Saura's later works were influenced by the European Informal respectively American Abstract Expressionism, a formal language in which the artist expresses his critical reflection on the Spanish society as well as the myths of modern society.



The lithograph in colors is signed ‘Saura’ and inscribed ‘e. a.’ as épreuve d'artiste. The sheet is mounted and framed at the top on a subset leaf. It is in very good condition. The full sheet image measures 65 x 50 cm, the framed dimensions 86.5 x 67.5 cm. The frame with minimal signs of use.



Antonio Saura (1930-1998)

The Spanish artist began painting and writing through a heavy tuberculosis illness and five years of strict bed rest. He was a co-founder of the artist group El Paso, which was founded in 1957 in Madrid and whose director he was until 1960. Successful years were to follow with first exhibitions in international galleries. The artist became increasingly active in prints and even interrupted painting on canvases. Saura is known as an adversary of the Franco regime. In 1977, he began publishing some of his writings. In addition, he created decors for theatre, opera and ballet. Saura took part in four documents and exhibitions in international museums. He received the Guggenheim-Prize, the Gold Medal for Fine Arts of the Spanish State and the Great Art Prize of the City of Paris. (cru)
