Entrepeneur (1845-1896) and one of the greatest military commanders of both the Cuban wars. He was second-in-command of the Cuban Army of Independence. ALS in Spanish, signed “Antonio Maceo,” one page both sides, 5 x 8, September 26, 1878. Letter to Senior Hilario Cisneros written while in exile. In full: “Since my arrival to this place I’ve been sick, suffering different aches and pains. At this moment the doctor recommends spending a season in the country, because if I relapse while in town it could be dangerous. This illness and my weakness keep me from the pleasure of writing to all my friends, please apologize to them for me. Send me the official and personal documents that were left with you. If you can, send me the recommendation letters that were offered by the Consul of Honduras and Guatemala for the presidents of both republics. I would like to thank you and them in advance for all of these undeserved services. I could tell you a lot about Cuba but I can’t write for very long.” Professionally silked and in very good condition, with scattered toning and foxing, and several small areas of paper loss primarily to edges.
