ALS in English, one page, 4.25 x 6.75, July 1892. Dvorak writes from Vysoká [Czechoslovakia] to an unnamed “Dear Friend.” In part: “Some days ago I sent you the full score of the mass (M.S.) as you asked me to write for you. I maked [sic] it for a large orchestra (except Fl: and Ob.) and I hope it is done to your satisfaction. Please let me know if you got my M.S. and all will be right.” Matted and framed, with a portrait to an overall size of 16.25 x 13. Recipient’s pencil notation to top left corner (”£50 agreed fee for the orchestration”), light mirroring of text from premature folding, and some mild toning and creasing, otherwise fine condition. Dvorak originally completed his Mass in D major in 1887. In 1892, the year of this correspondence, he expanded the instrumentation for a concert in London which took place the following March. The recipient of the letter was possibly composer Berthold Tours, who prepared the new arrangement for publication. Around the time of this letter, Dvorak was preparing to travel to the United States to assume the position of director of he National Conservatory in New York. The founder had hoped that the addition of Dvorak would help create an American musical tradition—one that the relatively ‘young’ United States was lacking in comparison to the institutions enjoyed by Europe.
