Distinguished Czech composer (1841–1904) of orchestral and chamber music, best known for his Symphony No. 9, ‘From the New World.’ Excellent 4.25 x 6.5 three-quarter length cabinet portrait by John Collier of Birmingham, England, depicting Dvorak nattily attired and brandishing a slight smile, signed in ink in the lower border, “Antonin Dvorak, Praha, 18 12/6 97.” Very faint silvering and areas of light toning to the image, a trivial surface scuff, and light soiling to borders, otherwise fine condition.

Dvorak was in the twilight of his life when he signed this image in 1897, the same year that his daughter married a former pupil of the composer, Josef Suk. A year earlier, he visited London for what was to be the final time to attend the premiere of his Cello Concerto in B minor. An absolutely amazing portrait signed by the great composer whose work was celebrated across the globe during his lifetime. Provenance: The Barry Hoffman Collection.
