This is a silkscreen in colors by the Spanish artist Antonio Saura (1930-1998). It is titled ‘Hoy, Después de ir a la Iglesia’ and was created in 1962 in Madrid. It is a plate-filling composition, depicting a frontal half-figure in luminous and fresh colors. ‘Hoy, Después de ir a la Iglesia’ is sheet 7 of the series ‘Diversaurio’. It was one of his first series, consisting of ten prints in total. The edition was accompanied by texts of José Ayllon.

The silkscreen in colors is signed and dated ‘Saura 62‘ lower right in pencil, as well as inscribed ‘P.A’ lower left in pencil. The sheet is minimally toned along the edges, the print is besides that in very good condition. The sheet is reversibly verso mounted in two points on cardboard. The dimensions of the almost full sheet image are 77.5 x 55.5 cm and the framed dimensions are 86.5 x 64.5 cm.



Antonio Saura (1930-1998)

The Spanish artist began painting and writing through a heavy tuberculosis illness and five years of strict bed rest. He was a co-founder of the artist group El Paso, which was founded in 1957 in Madrid and whose director he was until 1960. Successful years were to follow with first exhibitions in international galleries. The artist became increasingly active in prints and even interrupted painting on canvas. Saura is known as an adversary of the Franco regime. In 1977, he began publishing some of his own writings. In addition, he created decors for theatre, opera and ballet. Saura took part four times on the documenta and on many exhibitions in international museums. He received the Guggenheim-Prize, the Gold Medal for Fine Arts of the Spanish State and the Great Art Prize of the City of Paris.
