Tischbein, pen and brown ink, grey and brown wash, on paper, squared in black chalk, brown framing lines, with an old inscription below La vertu Eroica a fortuna Contrai Sostentata da malatia L'invidia, il Tempo dorme sotto il plattano, Signis Speranzie, 26 x 34 cm, slightly attached to the support and taped to the mount along central crease on the reverse, slightly stained, (GL). Anton Tischbein went to Italy together with his brother Johann Heinrich the Elder and stayed in Rome in 1750/51. In 1766 he settled in Hamburg. He used his sketches made in Italy as the basis for numerous compositions. He also collaborated in the decoration of the former Castle of Wandsbek, where in 1778 he decorated a small room with seven wall panels, a door frame, and a wall painting. EURO 600 800 US $ 590 790
