Scientist and a pioneer in the study of electric and luminescent phenomena (1788–1878) who was the father of the physicist Edmond Becquerel and grandfather of Nobel Prize–winning physicist Henri Becquerel. In 1837 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and received its Copley Medal for his various memoirs on electricity; his name is one of the 72 names inscribed on the Eiffel Tower. Scarce ALS in French, signed “Becquerel,” one page, 5.25 x 8.25, no date. Untranslated letter in which Becquerel assures the recipient that a portrait left to him had been part of the public domain for 120 years, where it could indicate possibilities "of producing biographies of celebrated artists for you, who were members of the Academy of Fine Arts." Reverse of second integral page bears an ownership stamp belonging to Dr. Max Thorek of Chicago. In fine condition.
