19th.-20th. pure silver spice tower decorated with 4 gilded bells and a flying bird on top. The container has 2 lions at the base of the tower container and decorated in high and low relief. It is marked on the bottom 999 Smarak and is very heavy. Above the spice container, there is a 6 sided view terrace and a multiple doors interior. This is the most unusual spice tower we have ever seen, both of monumental proportions and weight. A research of this item shows that it was created in Maharashtra, India, probably in Cochin, by a master silversmith. The design combines the Islamic design on the terrace above the spice container reminding a muezzin pavilion terrace, Buddhist influence on the lotus leaves-like decorations above the terrace design and Christian-pagan influence represented by 2 lions at the base of the tower and the flying bird on top of the tower. Estimated value: $3.000.
