19th. century large jadeite carving in high relief on a plaque with pierced, open work featuring a dragon and a facing phoenix bird. A square opening in the center is partly covered with lotus flower, buds and dendrils. The obverse is slightly convex, while the reverse side is flat and a central panel features a blooming cherry tree, mountains, a bird and the sea waves.
The jadeite plaque has a variety of colors starting from yellowish green to deep apple green. This is an exquisite handcarving with intricate details indicating that the artist did not shortcut this work in any way. Length: 5.8" (14.5 cm.). Width: 3.8" (9.5 cm.). Provenance: Dr. Veleanu's jade collection, the renown author of collectors' textbook: "Jade, 5000 BC to 1912 AD, Guide to collectors.". Estimated value: $5.000.
