"View Near Upminster, Essex, England" by James Edwin Meadows Meadows was born in London, March 13, 1822. His landscapes were exhibited at the Royal Academy, London from 1854 through 1872, and at the British Institute from 1855 to 1867. The artist was a contemporary of John Constable, England's great master of landscape, "and an uncommon similarity is seen in the handling of his technique and color." His paintings are found in many of the galleries of the British Isles and in private collections throughout Europe and America. He died in Bristol in 1877.

A London landscape painter, James Edwin Meadows was the son of well known artist, James Meadows Senior, and came from a family with a strong artistic tradition.

Despite being based in London, James Edwin Meadows travelled extensively throughout Great Britain seeking inspiration for his landscapes, particularly concentrating on the Southern coastline. He frequently painted views in Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight.

James Edwin Meadows exhibited at the major London Galleries including the Royal Academy (1854-72), the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists.
