Antique wood plane marked H. Chapin -- a magic and famous name familiar to antiquers as a family of 18th C. furniture makers working in the Windsor-Hartford area of the CT Valley. Hermon Chapin (bn. 1799, died 1866) founded the Union Factory in 1826 in Pine Meadow, CT to produce fine cabinetmaker's tools. This 19th C. plane is made of beautifully figured cherrywood with a wonderful undisturbed patina and natural signs of use. Marked on nose: UNION FACTORY WARRANTED H. CHAPIN, No. 112 (mark used 1826-66). Metal blade marked Baldwin Middletown, CT, U. S. A. Not your ordinary wood planer, this one has a very special significance to collectors of early American furniture.
