Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle, with extra magazine tube and 61 rounds of ammunition, #17799, .40-82 WCF cal., blued 28'' octagonal barrel, with dovetailed folding globe front and adjustable leaf rear sights, marked with the maker's name and address in two lines ahead of rear sight, and ''40-82 W.C.F.'' at breech; case hardened receiver (marked ''Model 1886'' on top tang, with 2-line 1884-85 patent dates and ''17799'' on lower tang), loop operating lever, hammer, forend cap and crescent buttplate; oil-stained walnut forend and buttstock. Mfg'd 1888. Condition is very good. Barrel retains approx. 20% original thin blue (cleaned at barrel address and with a 3'' patch of pitting on left flat at muzzle), receiver and lever case hardening have mostly silvered out, buttplate cleaned to bright metal. Stocks show the expected marks of age and use but smooth, solid and with good color. Action is smooth and tight; bore is etched with defined rifling and should clean better. Extra mag tube retains perhaps 20% blue. Another Browning brothers design, the Model 1886 featured a more compact frame capable of handling ''big game'' calibers and was a favorite of Theodore Roosevelt. Est.: $1,500-$2,000. (Antique)
