Antique Winchester Model 1885 High-Wall Lever Action Sporting Rifle, #23299, .45-70 CF cal., blued 30'' heavy octagonal barrel (likely No. 3) with dovetailed bead-blade front and buckhorn rear sights, marked with maker's name and address on top flat and ''45-70'' at breech; case hardened ''Thinside'' receiver with serpentine operating lever-trigger guard that drops action open for loading/extraction, has Lyman screw-adjustable top-tang sight, marked ''Pat Oct 7th 79'' and ''23299'' on lower tang; two-piece oil-stained walnut stocks, forend with ebony (or buffalo horn) wedge insert at Schnabel tip, buttstock with steel crescent buttplate. Mfg'd ca. 1888. Condition is fine+, the barrel retaining approx. 85% smooth original blue, thinning at highpoints, the receiver with traces of case color but mostly silvered out, the lever showing softly mottled colors. Stocks are smooth and solid with only very minor handling marks, nice grain and color. Action is crisp; bore is brilliant having etching toward muzzle and sharp rifling. This one is a rare beauty, especially in this large ''buffalo'' caliber. Est.: $1,600-$2,400. (Antique)*
