This antique Victorian Era EAPC Cathedral Glass Spooner hails from the time when many fine, tall, stained-glass windows were installed in church buildings. Often they were there simply to reflect the glorious colors of the windows as sunlight shown through them on Sunday mornings during services: they also showed Biblical scenes or told a religious story. Often these windows were commissioned by families wishing to memorialize loved ones by having their names inscribed within the windows themselves. So, Cathedral, as this pattern is called, evokes those windows and brings them into the daily lives of parishioners. Bessie Lindsey speaks about this phenomenon in her seminal book "American Historical Glass" (1967. Charles E. Tuttle Company: Rutland, VT.).

The Cathedral pattern was manufactured by Bryce Brothers of Mount Pleasant Pennsylvania, makers of fine lead glassware, both crystal and in colors, circa 1885, and the United States Glass Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during the 1890s. The pattern is typified by tall arched cathedral windows, at the bottom of which begin a row of blocks, a row of stars, and a last row of blocks. In this spooner, the window shapes are presented three times, separated by what appear to be rays which possibly represent the sunlight coming through the cathedral windows. It has a footed pedestal. The spooner is 5 3/4 inches high and 3 inches across the top. The glass has a fine finish typical of high quality.
