The subject of this beautifully-executed oil on canvas is an aspect of the typical Western
Ukrainian countryside by important Ukrainian artist J. Pstrak. Signed in Latin alphabet on
the lower right side J. Pstrak therefore the painting is from late 19th century when he
creates in Munich. Jaroslaw PSt~6 talented 19th century Ukrainian artist born in
Hvizdets Ukraine (1878-1916), he studied in the Academy OfFine Arts in Krakowand
Munich, Germany. Shortly before his death he has returned to Ukraine and he illustrated
"Kobzar", the poetical works ofTaras Shevchenko. Pstrak's paintings rarely appear on
the international art market in view of the fact that he has died young and only a few
paintings were created. In 1960 in Ukraine was published the album with his art work.
The painting represents a ploughman in typical Ukrainian farmer working clothing
leaning heavily with both hands on his plough on the field which is drawn by two horses.
This work is executed with wonderful details, great atmosphere and colors, a fine
portrayal of the farmer and the horses. Photography's do not do justice to the quality of
the painting.
Painting has no restorations at all. Size without frame: 39 x 29 inches (99 x 73,5 cm).
Size with the frame: 46 Y2 x 36 inches (118 x 91,5 cm). The frame is also in excellent
condition.
