Antique Tower P-1856 Single Shot Infantry Rifle, with Unusual Breechloading Cartridge Alteration, #406, .577 CF cal., 30" round barrel marked with a chrysanthemum-like mark at breech, has block-blade front and sliding-leaf rear sights, bayonet lug at right; 3.75" breech marked "406" and what appears to be a Japanese character at top, with hinged "trapdoor" marked "406" with right thumb lever and bolt-like firing pin attached to unique hammer; flat lockplate marked "1868/Tower" ahead of hammer and "(large crown)" behind; mountings consist of brass trigger guard, iron buttplate, nosecap and 2 winged lock screw escutcheons, 2 clamping bands retaining the slotted/grooved ramrod. Oil-finished walnut fullstock has raised panels at each side of lock, step at lower band. Mfg'd ca. 1868. Condition is good having overall brown tone with scattered light discoloration to barrel and bands, silvered-out case colors, moderate patina to brass. Stock is sound with the scattered marks of military use, minor gouges at buttplate and lock, 3.25" crack emanating from rear lock screw. Action is crisp, bore shows overall frosting with scattered moderate erosion and very good rifling. Est.: $900-$1,200. (Antique)
