CH Wittmann (Paris) engraving, after Adrien Moreau, The Bridal Procession. Nicely framed in 25" x 33" wood frame with fabric border and under glass.
Adrien Moreau was born in Troyes, France on April 18,1843 and died in Paris, February 22, 1906. He is considered a sculptor, genre, historical painter, watercolorist and illustrator from the French school. Moreau received his formal training at the l?Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Isidore Alexandre Augustin Pils (1813-1875). He debuted at the Paris Salon of 1868. He was awarded a second-class medal at the 1876 Paris Salon and a silver medal in both the 1889 and 1900 Exposition Universelle. In 1889, Moreau illustrated Candide by Voltaire and Le Secret de Saint Louis by E. Moreau. He became Chevalier de la Légion d?honneur in 1892 which is one of France?s highest awards.
A pupil of M. Pils, M. Moreau has, like may other followers, emancipated himself from the traditions of his teaching and displayed his own individuality in his works.?M. Moreau is a verification in himself of the artistic axiom that a true artist, when so willed, can give equally good work in landscape as in figure painting.?Like Van Dyck, Mr. Moreau depicts his men as cavaliers, and gives his grandes dames as much refinement as grace. His touch is microscopic in its details, and yet the accessories are always kept subservient to the theme of the story. M. Moreau is an artist to the very tips of his fingers.
