Antique Swiss Model 1856/67 Milbank-Amsler Military Rifle, with Sling, #1074, 10.4 mm RF cal., 27" round barrel, small block-blade front and tangent rear sights, bayonet lug at right muzzle marked with "(cross)/V" and "(cross)/O" marks in several places, "GW", "128" and "Vaud" at breech; front-hinged trapdoor breechblock with auto-extraction marked "(sunken cross)/G", "vruhausia" (?) and "sig" (altered this rifle to cartridge breechloader) with other marks inside; flat lockplate with military hammer, trigger guard with spur, 2 spring-retained bands (middle with sling swivel); oil-finished walnut 3/4 stock marked "Vaud/174" at left has swivel at toe. Double set triggers (for target or sharpshooter use). Originally mfg'd as a percussion muzzleloader, altered to cartridge breechloader late 1860s. Condition is near excellent retaining approx. 90% original barrel/bands blue, thinning to guard, gunmetal gray buttplate, case colors silvered to bright, sharp edges and markings. Stock is smooth and sound showing minimal marks, lovely grain, color and finish. Action is crisp, lightly-frosted bright bore shows fine rifling. Russet leather sling shows surface wear but is sound. Capital of the Swiss canton (state) of Vaud is Lausanne, likely where this rifle was mfg'd. Est.: $1,000-$1,500. (Antique)
